White compound for electrical parts: switches and sockets, junction boxes, camera housings
Switches and sockets, multi-way adaptors, junction boxes, lamp housings and CCTV camera boxes are almost always white, and the customer looks at that first. So for makers of these parts the choice of compound is not only about price per kilogram: appearance, strength and ease of moulding all matter.
What does a good electrical part need from its compound?
| Property | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Even whiteness | A spot or yellow tint is noticed at once; consistency of colour between batches matters too (see batch consistency) |
| Resistance to breaking | Housings and switches must not crack on installation or impact |
| Suitable flow | For injection moulding the MFI must suit your machine; an extruded profile needs a different MFI |
| Dimensional stability | Electrical parts must fit precisely; filler reduces shrinkage (see filler percentage) |
| Flame behaviour | Many electrical parts need a UL94 result, which must be on the datasheet |
Virgin or recycled base?
In white, visible parts a virgin base gives a cleaner, more even colour; recycled is more economical for hidden or darker parts. A blend is possible, provided the ratio is fixed and recorded.
Epic 31 % filled grade
Epic has a filled grade with a white appearance, focused on break resistance and on extrusion and injection processing, marketed for electrical-industry parts. Properties not yet measured for this formulation (including flame behaviour) are blank on its datasheet; if your part needs them, say so from the start.
What to ask your supplier for
- The datasheet of that batch, with MFI and its test condition;
- a white sample to try on your own mould;
- the flame classification, if the part needs one;
- price per kilogram and density, so you can calculate cost per part.
